Abstract

613,776. Filters. PICKARD, J. A., and METAFILTRATION CO., Ltd. July 2, 1946, No. 19780. [Class 46] In a filter of the edge filtration type, the filter element is formed by a helically-wound wire adjacent turns or parts of turns of the wire being alternatively of plain and undulating form. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a wire 17, successive lengths of which are alternately of plain and undulated form, is wound round an apertured drainage tube 7. The tube is secured to a boss 11 on a rod 12 which is rotatably mounted in a partition 6 dividing a container 1 into two parts 4, 5 for unfiltered and filtered liquid respectively. The wire 17 is engaged by a scraper 21 on a sleeve 20 which is slidably mounted on a rod 10 secured to the partition 6. The rod 12 has a handle 16 by means of which the tube 7 with the wire 17 can be turned with respect to the scraper 21 whereby solid impurities are removed from the wire. The undulations in the wire 17 may be in a vertical instead of a horizontal plane, or may extend helically along the wire. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the helically-coiled wire 17 has the undulations horizontal and is secured at each end to a collar 24 the lower collar being connected to the drainage tube 7, which is pressed towards the partition 6 by means of a spring 26. A brush 27 with a handle 31 is rotatably mounted in the partition 6. To clear the wire 17 the handle 31 is turned to bring the bristles against the wire and the handle 16 of the rod 12 is depressed and turned so that the wire is engaged by the bristles. The filter may be used with a filter aid of diatomaceous earth.
