Abstract

613,594. Portable turning apparatus ; boring- bars. HAWLEY, J. E. June 20, 1946, No. 18530. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] A hand or power-operated valve re-seating tool comprises a base member with several faces to any one of which an angularly adjustable boring-head is secured, a boring-spindle sliding in a sleeve in the head and having a pilot rod and a lateral passage for a cutter. means for locating the cutter in position and for feeding it laterally, and means for feeding the boring spindle. A slotted base a has three faces a<SP>1</SP> a<SP>2</SP>, a<SP>3</SP>, Fig. 6, on one of which the boring-head c may be secured at the required angle by bolts c<SP>1</SP>, c<SP>2</SP>. A boring-spindle c is slidably mounted in a sleeve d of the head and a cutter l, Fig. 5, having a micrometer screw l<SP>1</SP> at one end is fitted in a hole j, Fig. 3, in the spindle, the head of the screw abutting on a flat k<SP>2</SP> on a spring-loaded rod k extending through the spindle. The rod k is prevented from turning by a pin m in a slot g<SP>1</SP> and may be fed down. wards by a nut p having a locking screw p<SP>1</SP> so that the cutter may be fed outwards by a second flat k<SP>1</SP> in order to form an undercut recess for the valve seat ring. When boring a plain recess, the cutter may be locked in position by a screw e<SP>2</SP> engaging a slot l<SP>3</SP> in the cutter. The spindle is fed downwards by a nut d<SP>1</SP> screwed on the sleeve d and engaging a collar q locked to the spindle by set-screws engaging a slot on the spindle. Before engaging the nut d<SP>1</SP> with the threads on the sleeve, the collar q can be set to act as a depth stop by inserting the new valve insert between it and the top of the sleeve and then locking it to the spindle by the screws q<SP>1</SP>. A pilot pin f is secured to the spindle by a knurled nut f<SP>1</SP>. Assembling force fits.-A dolly for hammering in the valve insert may be fitted in the sleeve d in place of the boring-spindle.
