Abstract
613,528. Wind tunnels; aeroplane wing flaps. GROUPEMENT FRANCAIS POUR LE DEVELOPPEMENT DES RECHERCHES AERONAUTIQUES. Dec. 11, 1945, No. 33536. Convention date, March 19. [Class 4] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXII] In order to avoid separation and turbulence in a fluid moving with respect to surfaces between which a rotor is located, the ends of the rotor are extended outwards in a smooth curve to meet tangentially a surface perpendicular to the rotor axis and the surfaces. Figs. 3 and 4 show the invention as applied to a wind tunnel, the rotors 5 being mounted at the junction of the working section 2 and the diffuser 6. A portion of the peripheral surface of each rotor projects into the airstream, and the rotors are driven so that the projecting surfaces move in the direction of the air stream. The ends of the rotors are formed with quadrantal surfaces 11 which are tangential to the side walls 10 of the tunnel. Slots 8, 9 are formed ahead and in the rear of the rotors, to improve the air flow, and further slots 12 may also be provided in the side walls 10 of the tunnel for this purpose. In the aeroplane wing construction shown in Fig. 7 a rotor R is mounted between each flap and the wing, each rotor being formed with arcuate surfaces D where it meets the fuselage F, engine fairing M, and the end and intermediate guide plates G. As shown in Fig. 12 the surface of the rotor projects above the upper surface of the flap 5.
