Abstract

<PICT:0612828/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0612828/IV(a)/2> The abrading and/or polishing steps in cold working an optical surface on glass are carried out using a lap having a working surface comprising a thermoplastic synthetic resin or cellulose derivative moulding composition corresponding in shape to the optical surface to be produced and having a softening point above 95 DEG F. Thermoplastic resins specified are polystyrene, methylmethacrylate, vinyl resins, polyvinylidene chloride, while cellulose derivatives are cellulose acetate and acetobutyrate, ethyl cellulose, and oxidized cellulose acetate prepared as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,358,064 and used in conjunction with plasticizers comprising methyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate, triacetin, dimethyl phthalate dibutyl tartrate, camphor, diethyl phthalate, and tripropionin. An abrading lap for use as above comprises a metal supporting member 18, Fig. 2, and a synthetic resin mass 17. In Fig. 3, the metal support 20 is embedded in a mass of cellulose acetate composed of layers having different compositions and hardness.
