Abstract
612,723. Gyroscopic compasses. STEVENS, A. H. (Sperry Gyroscope Co., Inc.). Jan. 31, 1946, No. 3111. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Aug. 1, 1946.] [Class 97 (iii)] The gravitational control is provided by solid masses 15 resiliently mounted, e.g. by leaf-springs 14, on the rotor casing 1, so as to be displaced, when the gyro tilts, towards its lower end by an amount proportional to the tilt. The effective length of the springs 14 may be adjusted in accordance with the latitude by sliding blocks 17. A yoke-piece 16 connecting the masses 15 carries vertical blades (not shown) dipping into tanks of viscous liquid and a magnet or soft iron mass 25, which co-operates with an electromagnet on the follow-up ring 5 to provide a damping torque about the vertical axis as described in Specification 627,291. The electromagnet may be de-energized during changes of course of speed by means described 'in Specification 275,182, [Class 97 (iii)]. In a modification, Fig. 4, the movable walls 21 of two chambers 20, separated by an apertured partition 22 which is secured to the gyro casing 1, are clamped between screws 40, carried by the mass 15, so that the oscillations of the latter are damped by the transfer of oil from one chamber to the other. The viscosity of the oil may be chosen to give the required ballistic deflection to the gyroscope upon changes in the N-S speed of the ship.
