612,671. Treadle driving-mechanism. KOZUB, W., MACIEJEWSKI, K., and PRZYBYLSKI, K. May 29, 1946, No. 16394. [Class 136 (ii)] Treadle-operated vehicle driving mechanism comprises a pair of coaxially mounted rocking levers 8, 9, pedals 13, 14 for rocking the levers in opposite directions, a pair of driving wheels 2, 3 coupled to a driven shaft 1 through unidirectional clutches 2a, 3a and a pair of driving bands or chains 4, 5, each having one end connected to one of the rocking levers and passing over one of the driving wheels, the bands or chains being crossed-over and the ends of opposite bands being connected together. A ring 18 is slidable on each of the levers 8, 9 and the chains 4, 5 are attached to it through connections 4a, 5a. Wires 16, 22 are attached to the ring 18 so that a change of speed can be effected while the driving mechanism is in motion. The levers are curved, the radius of curvature having its centre on the centre of the axle 1. A multi-strand steel rope or multi-strand elastic cable 26 connects the axle 1 to the wheel hub 27 of the vehicle wheel 28. The cable strands open out and are forced on to wedges 29 by means of bushes 30. The wheel hub rotates on bearings 31 in a resiliently sprung wheel support 32. The direction of rotation of the driving axle may be reversed by disengaging a sleeve 12 from a dog clutch member 25.
