612,343. Actuating and driving machines; brakes. CINCINNATI MILLING MACHINE CO. May 9, 1946, No. 14011. Convention date, May 21, 1945. [Class 83 (iii)] A feed and rapid traverse mechanism for milling machines &c. having a movable member comprises a prime mover driving said member through change - speed gearing and an overrunning clutch, a rapid traverse drive including a clutch and a momentum brake for said member and means for disengaging the rapid traverse clutch and for momentrialy applying the brake in a predetermined manner. The table 10 is traversed by a feed-screw 31 working in a fixed nut 32a and is reversed by the clutch 32. The screw is driven for feed purposes through the change-speed box 18 and an overrunning clutch 20 and for rapid traverse through a gear 36, clutch 38 and shaft 39. The clutch 40 is actuated by pistons 52, 53 which are operated by hydraulic pressure from a pump 54 under the control of either of the hand-operated valves 61 and 67. When the change is made from rapid traverse to feed, a brake 43 is applied to the shaft 39 and is held for a predetermined time by means of a valve 81 and check valve 84. The table may be automatically operated by controlling the valve 67 by a trip plunger 87 and bell-crank 94, the plunger being actuated by dogs 95, 96 at each end of the traverse. The clutch 32 is then automatically operated by a yoke arm 92.
