[Class 130] In a machine for extracting tobacco from rejected cigarettes, the cigarettes are arranged upwards from a hopper by a conveyer 2 to longitudinal channels in a shoot 3 and thence to a conveyer 6 over which they pass by gravity beneath rotary knives 8 which rip open the cigarettes lengthwise and pass the tobacco and papers to a rotary tubular sieve 9 through which the tobacco passes to discharge belt 11 while the papers are retained by the sieve and discharged from the lower end thereof. The conveyer 2 may be driven by a separate motor and comprise a belt fitted with cross slats 21. The shoot 3 has longitudinal channels into which the cigarettes are deflected by camshaped members 22 spaced across the shoot and extending through the base thereof. The members 22 are coupled by rods 23, 24 to a shaft carrying a hook member 26 secured to a hammer 27. The latter coacts with a pin on a sprocket wheel 28 so that at each rotation of wheel 28 the hammer is caused to strike the base of the shoot and the members 22 are actuated to assist in arranging the cigarettes horizontally on the shoot 3. From the rotary knives 8 the tobacco and cut papers are delivered down shoots 34, 35, to the sieve 9 mounted in a casing 39. Tobacco passing through the sieve falls on to a reciprocating sieve 10 which allows the tobacco to pass to the belt 11 and discharge shoot 12. Paper from the sieves 9, 10 passes down shoots 14, 15 respectively to sieve 13 which is vibrated by a cam. Any tobacco still adhering to the paper is thus separated and passes along shoots 50 and 51 to a hopper 52 connected to a blower 16 and discharge pipe 17. Another blower removes dust from other parts of the machine. Preferably an electro magnet 74 is located at the end of shoot 3 to remove any metallic substance from the tobacco.
