Abstract
612,126. Organo-silicon compounds. FIFE, J. G. (Dow Chemical Co.). March 29, 1946, No. 9853. [Class 2 (iii)] [Also in Groups III, IV (a), and VIII] Alkoxy silicon halides of the general formula wherein each R represents a hydrocarbon radical and at least one R represents an alkyl radical containing 8 or more carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> represents a hydrocarbon or a hydrocarbonoxy radical, X represents halogen and n and n<SP>1</SP> are whole numbers having a sum not greater than 3, n being a number from 1 to 3 inclusive and n<SP>1</SP> being a number from 0 to 2 inclusive, are prepared by reacting from one to three molecular proportions of the same or different aliphatic alcohols at least one of which contains at least 8 carbon atoms with a polyhalo silicon compound of the general formula R<SP>1</SP>n<SP>1</SP>SiX 4 -n<SP>1</SP>, where R<SP>1</SP>, n<SP>1</SP> and X have the above significance. The reaction may be effected in an inert solvent, e.g. petroleum ether, ligroin, benzene or ethylene dichloride, and it may be necessary to cool the reaction mixture. Suitable alcohols are primary and secondary octyl alcohols, primary and secondary nonyl alcohols, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, cetyl, canoubyl, ceryl, myricyl and tarchonyl alcohols. Suitable polyhalo silicon compounds are : silicon tetrachloride, silicon tetrabromide, silicon tetrafluoride, methyl silicon trichloride, methyl silicon trifluoride, ethyl silicon tribromide, butyl silicon trichloride, octyl silicon trichloride, di-octyl silicon dichloride, dodecyl silicon trichloride, di-dodecyl silicon dichloride, phenyl silicon trichloride, diethoxy silicon dichloride, tolyloxy silicon trichloride and diphenoxy silicon dichloride. The products of the invention may be reacted with water to form silicols which intercondense to form viscous liquid or solid products. In an example the preparation of the following compounds is described: tri-octyloxy silicon chloride, dodecyl-di-iso-octyloxy silicon chloride, dodecoxy-silicon trichloride, di-dodecoxy silicon dichloride, tri-dodecoxy silicon chloride, dodecoxy-di-phenyl silicon chloride, di-dodecoxyisoamyl silicon chloride, di-octa-decoxy-propoxy silicon chloride, octadecoxy-dodecoxypropoxy silicon chloride, tri-myricyloxy silicon chloride, tri-dodecyloxy silicon bromide and di-octyloxy silicon di-fluoride.
