Abstract

Lubricating oils are obtained by reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of aluminium chloride at a temperature not below 20 DEG C. and not substantially higher than 80 DEG C. and with the aid of cooling, with petroleum obtained by fractional distillation of the products obtained by polymerizing an olefin in the presence of aluminium chloride. The olefins preferred are those having 2-5 carbon atoms, e.g. butylene, or a mixture of these, particularly a cracking gas freed from sulphur. Specified aromatic hydrocarbons are naphthalene, diethylbenzene, ethylnaphthalenes, diphenyl-methane and -ethane and homologues thereof and anthracene oil. During the reaction further olefin may be added, and also super-atmospheric pressure may be used. After the reaction the mixture is allowed to settle and the upper layer decanted and distilled. The lighter fractions may be used as diluents in a further olefin polymerization. Treatment of the used aluminium chloride complex gives an oil having drying properties. Specification 610,813, [Group IV (b)], is referred to.ALSO:Lubricating oils are obtained by reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of aluminium chloride at a temperature not below 20 DEG C. and not substantially higher than 80 DEG C. and with the aid of cooling, with petroleum obtained by fractional distillation of the products obtained by polymerizing an olefin in the presence of aluminium chloride.
