Abstract

611,260. Velocity-modulated tubes. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. April 25, 1946, No. 12525. Convention date, May 2, 1945. [Class 39 (i)] A tuning mechanism for adjusting the spacing between two electrodes resiliently connected together in an electron discharge device of the velocity modulation type, comprises a lever system interposed between the electrodes adjustable by a single controller device to produce a purely translatory motion between the electrodes that has to rotational component. A cavity resonator 16, Fig. 2, of the type described in Specification 554,574, comprises two portions interconnected by a flexible diaphragm 26. The resonator portions support grid electrodes 17, 18 which are held rigidly with respect to annular metal plates 15, 14 respectively. The metal plates 14, 15 are also interconnected by tension springs 29, Fig. 3. Compression springs may be used, Figs. 6-8 (not shown). The parallel motion producing mechanism is chiefly supported on the lower plate 14 by means of a mounting plate 30. The mechanism comprises pivoted at 33 a tuning lever 35 which has a bifurcated lower leg 34 provided at both terminals with upstanding tabs 37, 38, Fig. 5. These tabs have bearings 39, 41 seating on the adjacent ends of a U-shaped yoke lever 42 rockably supported by pivots 43, 44. One of these bearings may be the end of a screw which may be adjusted in the leg 34, to ensure proper bearing contact and relative parallelism between the leg 34 and yoke 42, Figs. 6-8 (not shown). Struts 49, 50, 51 threaded in plate 15 bear on the rockable levers, Fig. 3. Rotation of the tuning lever 35 about pivot 33 to oppositely rock the leg 34 and yoke 42 and so produce parallel motion between plates 14, 15 and hence electrodes 17, 18, is -effected by a micrometer mechanism comprising drum 61 controlling tuner shaft 58 for course adjustment and knob 71 controlling trimmer shaft 57 for fine adjustment. The fine adjustment shaft may be dispensed with, Figs. 6-8 (not shown). The struts 49, 50, 51 may be of a compound thermal compensation type and are pre-adjusted to secure the original parallelism between the electrodes. In another embodiment, Fig. 9, tuning lever 113 is engaged by a tuning shaft 119 for course adjustment, and the leg 112 of the tuning lever 113 supports on pivot 122 a trimmer lever 124. Adjustment of trimmer lever 124 by trimmer shaft 125 results in a small but permissible departure from parallelism of the resonator grids for fine tuning. Specifications 523,712 and 535,767 also are referred to.
