Abstract
A brake-lining, clutch facing, or like friction element comprises a uniform, compacted mixture of a hardened non-metallic binder constituting 5-25 per cent by weight of the mixture, and powdered soft iron, copper, aluminium, copper alloys consisting predominantly of copper constituting at least 40 per cent by weight of the composition. The binder may be a heat-hardening or cold-setting material such as a phenolic resin, rubber, p polymerized oil or the like. An agent to assist in obtaining smoother frictional engagement, such as a low-melting metal or alloy, e.g. cadmium, zinc, tin, solder, or, preferably, lead, or a non-metallic agent such as graphite, talc, mica, or other material possessing lubricating properties, may be added. Fillers for varying the frictional characteristics, e.g. barytes, clay, finely-divided silica, asbestos, graphite, litharge, zinc oxide, chopped wire, or zinc, may also be included. The powdered materials are mixed together and are subjected to a pressure of 3500 lbs. per square inch and a sufficiently high temperature to cure the binder, a reinforcing agent, such as a wire or fabric mesh, being included if desired.
