Abstract

610,240. Coin-freed apparatus. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., KERSHAW, N. G., and MASON, R. April 2, 1946, No. 10157. [Class 27] In apparatus comprising a coin counting receptacle through which the inserted coins are fed and which operates an associated ticket or other delivery mechanism if the coins are sufficient in number, the counting receptacle is normally closed and opens automatically to release the coins therein if they become jammed or are insufficient in number. Coin action, multiple-coin, mechanical and electrical connection.-Inserted coins pass down a chute 1 and are received separately between pins 4 on a rotating disc 3 driven by a motor 6. In their passage down the chute the coins momentarily close contacts 50 to energize parallel relays 44, 45 the latter completing a holding circuit for both at 'contacts 52, and the former closing the circuit of the motor 6. As the coins are carried round by the disc 3, each in turn trips a finger 16 on a rocking segment 17 and is then discharged to the till. The rocking of segment 17 repeatedly closes contacts 20, 21 to register the coins, and the delivery mechanism functions when the appropriate number have been registered. Operation of the delivery mechanism opens contacts 46 to de-energize relays 44 and 45, the former breaking the motor circuit after a time delay. If, however, coins are still present on the disc a parallel circuit to the coin contacts 50 is maintained through the coins so that the motor continues running and a further delivery occurs if the additional coins are sufficient in number. For this purpose, the pins 4 are mounted on an insulating ring 10 between inner and outer metal sections 7 and 8 of the disc 3. External connection is made to the sections 7, 8 and pins 4 by brushes 9 and 12. Returning coin; clearing-apparatus, automatic.-As the disc 3 rotates, a cam 28 on its shaft 5 rocks a lever 25, 26 which, by means of a driving pawl 24 pivoted therein, in co-operation with a retaining pawl 29, endeavours to rotate anti-clockwise a ratchet-toothed member 23. In normal operation, and whilst coins are being registered, the rocking of segment 17 trips the pawls 24 and 29 through a connecting pin 35, and prevents appreciable movement of the member 23. If, however, the inserted coins become jammed or are insufficient in number, segment 17 ceases to rock though the disc 3 continues running: the member 23 is consequently advanced step-wise until it reaches a position in which it breaks normally closed contacts 39 and closes contacts 40 and 41. Contacts 39 break the circuit of relays 44 and 45 and thence, eventually, that of the motor 6, whilst contacts 40 complete the circuit of a release magnet 15 which lifts a pivoted cover 13 over the disc to release the coins and return them to the operator. Contacts 41 energize a magnet 32 to disengage the pawls 24 and 29 to return the ratchet member 23.
