Abstract
609,970. Frequency modulation. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. March 27, 1946, No. 9419. Convention date, Sept. 17, 1941. [Class 40 (v)] Linear control of a valve reactance is effected by rectifying the oscillatory current flowing through the valve and feeding back the rectifier voltage to the valve grid in phase opposition to the modulating voltage. In the F.M. transmitter, Fig. 1, a valve generator 1 has its tuned circuit connected across the reactance valve 2, the grid of which is excited by a quadrature voltage derived from the normal phasing network. The modulating source 9 is connected between grid and cathode of the valve 2. A small coil 3 in the anode circuit is coupled to a tuned circuit 5 feeding a rectifier 7, the load resistance of which is in series with the source 9 to give a negative feed-back and to ensure linearity of modulation. Current flowing in the coil 3 due to the anode-earth capacity of the valve 2 is balanced in its effect on the circuit 5 by an oppositely-coupled coil 4 in series with an equal capacity 6. In a modified circuit, Fig. 2, the quadrature voltage from the phasing network is applied to the grid of the valve 2, is amplified therein, and is transferred through condenser 11 to the grid of a reactance valve 12 which has its anode and cathode connected across the oscillator tuned circuit. Negative feed-back is provided from the valve 2 as in Fig. 1. The modulating voltage may be applied in parallel to the grids of both valves 2, 12.
