Abstract
609,414. Control systems for X-ray apparatus. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. March 13, 1946, No. 7868. Convention date, March 15, 1945. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In X-ray apparatus having separate controls for adjusting the tube loading for screening and photographing, respectively, a further control is provided whereby, during screening, the tube loading may be increased for a limited period which is preferably dependent on the initial screening current. As shown in Fig. 1, the filament heating transformer 1 for a tube 2 includes in its primary circuit a tapped resistor 3, a portion of which may temporarily be short-circuited by a mercury switch 4 to increase the tube loading. Switch 4 (see Group XXXVII) is tilted from its normal position, in which its contacts are open, by electromagnetic actuating mechanism 14, 15 upon closure of a button 16. Release of the button returns the switch to its initial position, the mercury flowing back over a different path and closing the switch contacts whilst doing so. In the arrangement shown in Fig..3, the switch 4 is controlled by a valve 17 and condenser 20, the valve being normally biassed back by a battery 23 so that the switch-operating coil 18 in the anode circuit of the valve is de-energized. Closure of button 19 shorts the biassing circuit so that the valve conducts and the switch coil is energized. Auxiliary contacts 21 break the short-circuit and the bias voltage again builds upon on the grid of the valve at a rate determined by the values of a resistor 22 and capacitor 20. A portion of resistor 22 is constituted by a rheostat which is ganged with another rheostat 25 controlling the normal screening current, so that the period of closure of switch 4 is determined by the normal screening current. Switch 30 provides an independent control of normal screening current. Ganged change-over switches 26-29 are thrown to alter the tube supply circuits for radiography, the loading then being controlled by switches 31, 32.
