609,270. Grinding rotary cutters. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., FRAMPTON, S. E., and WRIGHT, A. March 11, 1946, No. 7463. Addition to 565,936. [Class 60] A cutter-supporting member for use in the grinding of a rotary cutter having a plurality of teeth around its periphery and a central bore by which the cutter may be mounted on a rotary shaft comprises (a) an expansible portion adapted to engage within, and to be expanded to grip, the bore of the cutter, and (b) a hollow portion adapted to receive a supporting post, on which it is readily able to be moved axially of the post, the cutter-supporting member having means arranged, when said member occupies a predetermined position axially of said post, to co-operate with other means adjacent said post but, when said member is moved along the post out of said position, to allow of rotation of the member and a cutter supported thereon, so that each tooth of the cutter may in turn be brought into a predetermined angular position for grinding. A vertical cylindrical post 10 adjustable along an arm 12 pivotally mounted on a shoe sole edge trimming machine as in Specification 540,142, [Group VII], is adapted to support a member carrying a cutter 50 for grinding the teeth thereof. The post 10 is seated within a bracket 20 adjustable about the axis of the post on a block 28 sliding with the post along the arm 12 in guides 13. The cutter-supporting member includes a sleeve 30 inserted into the bore of the cutter and a bush 38 expanded by screwing a collar 34 to grip the cutter. The support and cutter are placed over the post 10, a spline 44 upstanding from the bracket 20 engages between external teeth 32 formed on the lower part of the sleeve 30 and corresponding in number to the teeth of the cutter 50. After grinding one tooth the cutter support is lifted clear of the spline 44, turned a distance equal to the pitch of the teeth 32 and lowered into the post again, the spline now engaging between the next teeth.
