[Classes 23 and 117] Apparatus for separating a mixture of two substances of different density particularly coal and slate comprises a hopper 3 feeding the mixture through a metering device 4 and chute 5 on to a rotating disc 6 which spreads the mixture uniformly into an ascending air current produced by the fan 8. Heavy particles of both substances fall out through outlet 17 where volumetric sifting in a vibrating sieve 18 removes the smaller sizes of the higher density substance, slate. Centrifugal action caused by the vanes 12 enables larger particles in the suspension to drop into the cone-shaped part 11 and when a sufficient quantity has accumulated flaps 14 open to discharge the contents back into the air stream. Small particles in suspension passing out through conduit 13 are fed into a conventional cyclone separator 19 where they are deposited and fed through a chute 21 to a second apparatus similar to that described above.
