[Class 120(iii)] [Also in Groups V and XX] A photographic roll film spool consists of a preferably hollow core and two end flanges, one of which may be formed integrally with the core, each dished on its inner face and spaced on the core so that only the innermost and outermost convolutions of the spooled film contact the flange faces and the inter-flange distance at the flange peripheries is less than the width of the spooled film whereby concentric stepped ridges formed adjacent the flange peripheries hold fast in light-tight manner the leader strip or the outer layers of the backing paper once these are forced past them. The film-end retaining slot may extend right through the core which if hollow is formed with longitudinal 'side walls and converging or parallel transverse end walls defining the slot and serving both to prevent light passing to the spooled film via the hollow core and to reinforce the core. As shown the spool is formed from plastic material by injection moulding and comprises a hollow core 10 having a film slot 14 enclosed by a pair of parallel longitudinal walls terminating in transverse converging walls 17, 18 all four walls being integral with the core; an integrally moulded end flange 11 carrying concentric stepped ridges 24 and having a key slot 28 formed in it: and a separate flange 12 of similar design carrying a tubular boss 13 and provided with a bearing 30 for a spool supporting pin, said flange being attached to the core by a push fit or by uniting the core and flange by means of a suitable solvent or, in the case of thermoplastic materials, by heating.
