Abstract
608,505. De-icing equipment for aircraft. GOODRICH CO., B. F. Nov. 21, 1945, No. 31370. Convention date, Dec. 29, 1944. [Class 4] An inflatable de-icing shoe comprises three series of inflating tubes, the middle series being provided in that portion of the shoe covering the leading edge of the aerofoil, and the others in those portions covering the upper and lower surfaces to the rear of the leading edge, the middle series of tubes being larger than the others. In the form shown in Figs. 3, 8 and 9, the middle series of tubes 36 decrease in size from the centre line, while the smaller series of tubes 37 of the rearwardly extending portions are of the same size. The tubes of each series are preferably interconnected, in order that they may be inflated simultaneously. The shoe is made of rubber-like material, incorporating a fabric reinforcement which is extensible in the chordwise direction. Longitudinally extending ribs are provided on the undersurface of the shoe, to provide air channels 48 which communicate with the exterior for venting purposes. In the alternative form shown in Fig. 11, the venting channels 48 are provided only over the leading edge portion 62 of the shoe, securing means such as bolts passing through openings in the marginal portions 68. The undersurfaces of the rearwardly extending portions of the shoe are smooth, in order that they may be adhesively secured to the aerofoil surface.
