[Class 18] A powder compact or other case has an inner container comprising a receptacle 13 having a hollow surround 15 fitting into the case, a lid for closing the receptacle additional to the lid of the case and means for releasing the inner lid. The release mechanism is operated by the opening of the outer lid and may comprise a spring strip 21 to which is attached a catch 29, for securing the inner lid, and a plunger 25. One end of the strip is anchored at 22 and the other may be bent to bear against the inner receptacle 13 and the wall 16 of the surround 15. The plunger 25 passes through a hole in the wall 16 and through the outer case in the vicinity of its hinge and is so positioned that it is pushed inwardly by the opening back of the outer lid. The catch 29 projects through a hole in the surround 15 and engages the edge of the inner lid until such time as the plunger 25 is depressed, when the spring 21, already slightly flexed in the desired direction of movement, bends outwardly carrying the catch clear of the inner lid. When the outer lid is swung clear of the plunger, the catch 29 returns and may again engage the inner lid. Alternatively the release mechanism may comprise a rigid bar attached to the plunger 25 which is deflected by a cam surface on depressing the plunger and carries with it the catch 29, the catch being returned by a spring. In a circular compact, a slanting surface 32 may be fitted to give forward movement to the spring 21, an end of the spring being forced down the slope by the depressing of the plunger 25.
