Abstract

607,292. Endoscopes; surgical injection appliances. HILGER & WATTS, Ltd., and LOECK, G. June 21, 1945, No. 15888. [Class 81(ii)] [Also in Group XX] An instrument of the kind comprising a flexible tube for insertion into a body cavity, and containing a succession of lens components such as disclosed in Specifications 454,713, [Group XX], and 593,213, whereby an image of the part under observation may be transmitted to an eyepiece, incorporates means by which a medical, chemical or like substance can be introduced into the cavity when the tube is in position. As shown, tube 1 comprises a coil spring 12 carrying lenses 9, 9a, each mounted in a two-part section 10 with spacers 11 as in Specification 593,213. At one end, Fig. 1, the spring is fitted in a sleeve 16, on which is screwed the eyepiece tube and which carries a coupling sleeve 18 having a taper bore whereby the outer rubber tube 19 may be clamped when the eyepiece tube is screwed up. The other end of the spring is fitted with a socket 13, Fig. 2, to which is attached an extension piece 14 accommodating lamp 2, X-ray tube 22, window 7 and prism 8, and formed for the attachment of sponge 15. The spring is provided with a rubber covering tube 20, formed, e.g. by dipping, and wound spirally around this tube are leads 21 for the lamp and X-ray tube, the leads being connected at the other end of the instrument to sockets 24, 25, Fig. 4, a bore 26b in the outer rubber tube 19, communicating with a nipple 26 and terminating at 26c, enables air to be forced into the cavity for inflation thereof. A second bore 32b lined with a coil spring 37 formed in tube 19 accommodates a flexible tube 32 fitted with a hypodermic needle 31 and connected at the other end to a syringe. The tube is gripped in grooves formed on two rollers 33, 34 so that on rotation of knob 33b the tube may be reciprocated. The needle is guided by a hinged flap 28 normally held in the position shown in Fig. 2 by spring 29, but capable of being moved so that the end 28b projects outwardly to bend the tube 32 by the inflation of ring 27c which is connected by a third bore in tube 19 to nipple 27. Artificially radioactive substances, or substances capable of emitting ultra-violet rays under the action of the X-rays may be introduced into the body. Powder may be sprayed in gaseous suspension. Specification 607,352 also is referred to.
