Abstract
<PICT:0607282/III/1> Catalytic packing for apparatus in which liquids are treated with gases or vapours, comprises slender elements 16 such as rods, tubes or strips uniformly zig-zagged and arranged in parallel vertical planes making up a set disposed between sets in which the elements are arranged in planes at right angles to those of the first set. Each element is bent to form oblique sections 17 of equal length and the packing is built up by laying the elements in horizontal tiers 18, the elements in successive tiers being in vertical planes at right angles to those of the preceeding tier, and the tiers being interlinked at the bends which provide liquid mixing zones. All the elements apices in one tier may be aligned or they may be staggered to reduce the size of the gas passages between the elements. Grooved or fluted metal or plastic of other than cylindrical form or multiple braided or helically twisted wires may be used. The packing may be made of or carry nickel, copper or other catalytic material, or carry viscous liquid catalyst, e.g. phosphoric acid. Specification 607,284, [Group XII], is referred to.
