Abstract

The abrasive articles described in the parent Specification are modified by using as binder a copolymer of a butadiene compound and a halogen-substituted mono-olefinic compound which is liquid at ordinary temperatures, the copolymer being vulcanized to rigidity with sulphur. Butadiene compounds specified are isoprene, dimethyl butadiene, chloroprene, bromoprene, divinyl ether and vinyl acetylene. Halogen-substitute monomers specified are halogen-substituted acrylic and methacrylic esters, allyl and vinylidene chlorides. A third, softening, monomer may be copolymerized, those specified being vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, propene, butene and isobutene. Dibutoxyethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, soft coal tars, coumarone resins, phenol-formaldehyde resin, benzothiazyl disulphide, hard rubber dust, clays, zinc oxide, and anti-oxidants may be added. Abrasives specified are cryolite and silicon carbide.
