Abstract

Substantially rigid bonded abrasive wheels &c. are made from abrasive grains, e.g. of silicon carbide bonded with a vulcanizable product of butadiene or its homologues, e.g. polymerized isoprene, chloroprene, divinyl ether, or vinyl acetylene or two or more of these copolymerized together with one or more hardening monomers, e.g. acrylic nitrile, an acrylic or methacrylic ester, vinyl chloride or styrene and a vulcanizing agent, e.g. sulphur. A softening or plasticizing monomer may also be present, e.g. vinyl acetate, methyl acrylic ester, propene, butene, or isobutene. A large proportion of sulphur may be used for vulcanization. The copolymerization may be effected in the emulsified state. There may be 60 to 75 per cent of butadiene to 40 to 25 per cent of acrylic nitrile or styrene. Vulcanizing agents, fillers or reinforces, accelerators, antioxidants, and plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl or dibutoryethyl phthalate, tricresylphosphate, a soft coal tar, or coumar resin may also be used. The product may be cured at 340 DEG F. for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.ALSO:Substantially rigid bonded abrasive wheels &c. are made from abrasive grains, e.g. of silicon carbide bonded with a vulcanizable product of butadiene or its homologues, e.g. polymerized isoprene, chloroprene, divinyl ether, or vinyl acetylene or two or more of these, copolymerized together with one or more hardening monomers, e.g. acrylic nitrile, an acrylic or methacrylic ester, vinyl chloride or styrene, and a vulcanizing agent, e.g. sulphur. A softening or plasticizing monomer may also be present, e.g. vinyl acetate, methyl acrylic ester, propene, butene, or isobutene. A large proportion of sulphur may be used for vulcanization. The copolymerization may be effected in the emulsified state. There may be 60 to 75 per cent of butadiene to 40 to 25 of acrylic nitrile or styrene. Vulcanizing agents, fillers or reinforcers, accelerators, anti - oxidants, and plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl or dibutoxyethyl phthalate, tricresylphosphate, a soft coal tar, or coumar resin may also be used. The product may be cured at 340 DEG F. for 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
