Abstract
A method of increasing the specular reflectivity of metal flakes comprises providing a uniform dispersion of ball-milled leafing metal flakes in a paint thinner, the proportion of metal in the mass being such that the mass is relatively dry and stiff but still plastic, and subjecting the mass to a mechanical working whereby individual flakes are subjected to friction and pressure that is controlled between limits. The metal flakes may be ball-milled in a liquid made up of a thinner and a leafing agent, whereby the particles are brought to flake form and furnished with a leafing film, the mixture discharged from the mill, liquid removed to such an extent that the metal content exceeds 80 per cent and the mass subjected to mechanical working by firing it through apertures of an extrusion plate, these apertures having a length not less than and preferably more than twice their diameter, whereby individual flakes are caused to move mainly flatwise over each other under controlled friction and pressure. It is preferred that the starting material is a filter cake containing 78 to 90 per cent aluminium or about 90 per cent copper. Specifications 391,839 and 477,451 are referred to.
