Abstract

606,522. Milling-machines making fastenings. DZUS, W. Sept. 21, 1945, No. 24574. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] A milling-machine is provided with a rotating tool-supporting spindle, a shiftable actuator, whereby the spindle may be advanced to an operative position or retracted, and means operable by said actuator, whereby the spindle may be locked in position. A machine for milling the spiral slots 14, Fig. 16, in fastener blanks comprises two opposing cutters 112, Fig. 8, each carried in a spindle 86 driven by a pulley 103 and mounted in a sleeve 64, which is provided on its lower surface with a rack 65 meshing with a gear 66'carried in the bearing 60. The bearing 60 is split at 73 so that the sleeve 64 may be clamped in position by a bolt 79 passing through the centre of the gear 66. An actuator 77 is formed with a hexagonal hole 76 to fit flats 83 on the bolt-head and similar flats 75 on a collar 71 keyed to the gear-shaft 67. The actuator may thus be turned to unlock the bolt, moved forward to turn the gear 66, and returned to relock the sleeve 64 in position. Each pulley 103 is provided with holes 110, one of which engages a resiliently mounted pin 107 to lock the spindle when retracted to the inoperative position. Work-holders.-The blank is placed in a holder 39, Fig. 4, keyed to a slide 31 which is held advanced by a spring 37 and is mounted in a bracket 22 of the machine. Opposed slots 41 are provided in the holder 39 to accommodate the milling-cutters. Axial spindle feeds.-The blank is fed past the cutters by a screw-driver 48, Fig. 17, which engages the slotted head. The screw-driver is mounted in a bearing-sleeve 45 clamped in a bearing 44 and is actuated by a hand-lever 58, Fig. 2, spiral motion being imparted to it by a roller 57 engaging a cam-slot 54 in the sleeve 45. Gauging means are provided for adjusting the screw-driver accurately to correlate the positions of the head-slot and the spiral slots 14 in the fastener and comprise a collar 141 sliding on the sleeve 45 to give angular adjustment, and a rotating collar 142 to give axial adjustment. Angular adjustment is made with respect to a mark 143 on the bearing 44; axial adjustments are made from some known position. Lubricating cutting-tools.-Oil is conveyed through a central bore 12, Fig. 4, in the workslide 31 and a bore 120 and the slots 41 in the work-holder to the cutters. Chips and oil are then discharged to a chute 124. Large chips are conveyed to a container 129, Fig. 2. The small chips and oil fall through a grating 125 to a chute 130 and are conveyed to a container 131 provided with a perforated base. The oil passes on to a grating 136 to drop into a container 133, Fig. 11. Any fine particles left are deposited therein and clear oil flows to a sump 134. Chucks.-The milling-cutter 112, Fig. 8, is held in a bevel-closing collet 95 which is tightened by an arbor 94, threadably engaged therewith and having a head 97.
