606,509. Optical glass. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co., Sun, K. H., and Huggins, M. L.). June 26, 1945, No. 16272. Drawings to Specification. [Class 56] An optical glass is made from a fused batch of inorganic compounds at least 60 per cent by weight being fluorides including beryllium fluoride in amount between 12 and 50 per cent by weight, one or more relatively insoluble divalent metal fluorides and not more than 25 per cent by weight or 26 mol. per cent, if any, alkali metal fluoride. AlF 3 may be present, and other fluorides specified include those of La, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, divalent Pb, Ce, Th, Y, Pr, Nd, Sm, trivalent Bi, In and Ga. The alkali metal fluorides, if present, may be those of Na, K, Rb or Cs. The batch may also contain compounds of oxygen, sulphur, and phosphorus within specified limits. Many examples are given and their optical properties tabulated and discussed, the relationships between the refractive index for the D-line and the Abbe value, the blue partial dispersion ratio and the Abbe value, and the red partial dispersion ratio and the Abbe value being referred to, particularly in their application to lenses and lens systems. The glasses are generally colourless, but those containing Pr, Nd and Sm are, respectively, yellowish-green, pink and pale amber. Specification 462,304 is referred to.
