Abstract
606,397. Apparatus for making peat fuel briquettes. BERENDS, J. Jan. 14, 1946, No. 1274. [Class 87(ii)] Peat is extruded by a worm 24 from a casing 13 through a tapered casing part 22 and down a shoot 14, cut into lengths by circular saws 15, and passes on boards 16 under a vertically-reciprocating guillotine 19 which cuts the lengths into briquettes. Water squeezed out of the peat drains through holes 30 in the casing into a trough (not shown) and through slits in the shoot. The saws 15 extend completely through the shoot. The guillotine comprises a knife 38 carried by parallel links 39 and moved up and down by a crank 40 and connecting rod 41. The links are carried by a headpiece 44 having stems 45 which slide against the action of coiled springs 47. As the peat moves forward during the cutting stroke of the knife, the knife assembly moves forward until the knife rises out of the peat, whereupon the springs return the knife to its original position. To ensure that the knife does return to its initial position, the springs are supplemented by pushers 48, pivoted at 49 and operated by an eccentric pin 52, which engage flanges 54 on the stems 45. As the peat travels down the shoot it may be impressed with wording by one or more embossing drums extending through an opening in the shoot. Such a drum may incorporate an adding machine, and may have spikes which enter the peat and by which the drum is positively rotated by the peat. The drum, thus driven, may drive the guillotine, which would thus make transverse cuts in accordance with the rate of feed of the peat. The apparatus may be in the form of a transportable plant.
