Abstract

605,633. Revivifying gas purifier liquor; cooling coke. KOPPERS CO., Inc. Jan. 1, 1946, No. 92. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1945. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55(ii)] The heat of quenching liquor from a coke quenching system 44 is utilized to generate vapour under sub-atmosperic pressure in the regenerator 26 for fouled absorbent, e.g. an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate and acid carbonate which has abstracted hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen cyanide from coke oven gas in an absorber 4, in order to sweep the absorbed constituents as a gas from the liquid, which is returned via a water pipe cooler 86 to the absorber. A vacuum pump 40 withdraws the effluent gases through condensers 32, 36, condensed steam being returned to the bottom of the absorber. The quenching station includes superposed sprays 46, 54, liquor draining to a hot well 62 being pumped through the coils of a reboiler 70 in the absorbent liquid at the base of the regenerator and thence through a sump 74 to which make-up water is added, to a storage tank 48. In a modification the quenching liquor is passed into a vaporizer in communication with the regenerator in the base of which a small steam coil may be fitted. Most of the quenching liquor vapours are condensed on issuing from the regenerator and hydrogen sulphide is evolved from the condensate in a stripping column having a small steam coil and acting as a reflux condenser.
