Abstract

605,485. Range-finders. KODAK, Ltd. Dec. 20, 1945, No. 34564. Convention date, Jan. 19, 1943. [Class 97 (i)] A range-finder having an optical system forming images in a comparison plane or planes by light received from two spaced view points has a fiducial mark and coincidence line as adjustment coincidant elements, an image of the mark being formed adjacent the line by part or the whole of the optical system and the line being movable to effect coincidence thereof with the mark image when the range is indicated by a scale and index one of which is connected to the coincidence line. The invention may be applied to coincidence or stereoscopic finders. Fig. 1 shows a coincidence finder comprising entrance windows 11, objections 12 and a central combining prism system 13, 14, 15 and right-angled prisms 16, 17 having a portion 19 of the interface reflecting and a portion 18 transmitting to permit juxtaposed images from each window to be viewed by eye 22. The reflecting surface has a fiducial mark 20 an image of which is projected via prism 14, lens 12 and prism 11 to a prism 26 cemented thereto whence it passes to a similar prism 27 and thence via lens 12, prism 13 and auxiliary prism 28 to form an image 201 adjacent a spiral coincidence line 32 on a rotatable disc 30. The finder images are adjusted to coincidence by light deviator 40 and after rotating the disc 30 until fiducial mark and line coincide the range may be read on a scale 35 or transmitted to a director of anti-aircraft fire. Alternatively both mark and line may be formed on the disc 30 and may be slightly converging straight lines, the disc then being moved linearly to effect coincidence. When applied to a stereoscopic under the spiral and mark image are observed by a second observer and a mark indicating the correctness of the halving adjustment may also be projected as described in Specification 605,483.
