Abstract

<PICT:0605105/IV(a)/1> A perforated or reticular film or sheet is obtained by covering, with a dispersion of a finely powdered thermoplastic polyvinyl resin in a practically non-volatile plasticiser in which the resin dissolves only very slowly or not at all at ordinary temperatures, an engraved metal surface in which are grooves each of which at a number of places meets or intersects other grooves, removing from the surface the dispersion which has not collected in the grooves, gelatinizing by heat the dispersion which has collected in the grooves, and removing the gelatinized material from the grooves when it has been cooled sufficiently for it not to adhere to the metal. The polyvinyl resin dispersion is preferably pressed well into the grooves by means of a spreader bar or cylinder. The engraved metal surface may be polished and it may be coated with a film separating aid, such as a high melting point grease, aluminium or zinc stearate, a glazing material such as sodium silicate, or a detergent. The grooves should be free from undercuts to avoid difficulty in stripping the perforated sheet. The polyvinyl compound may be a polyvinyl ester, polyvinyl chloride, an interpolymer of vinyl chloride and a vinyl organic ester or of vinyl chloride and an acrylic or substituted acrylic ester, or a polymer of an acrylic or substituted acrylic ester. The non-solvent plasticizer may be dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, dihexyl phthalate, and dioctyl phthalate. Heating of the engraved surface may be obtained by means of hot fluids, infra red heating lamps, or induction heating means. The perforated sheets may be used as curtains, fishing nets, filters and strainers, nets for protecting plants and trees, fancy wrappings, scrim packaging for meat in cold storage, and in the production of lamp-shades and uppers for shoes. As shown, a dispersion of polyvinyl resin 2 is fed on to a cold portion of roller 1 from a tray 3 and is carried past a stationary roller 4 which forces it well into the grooves of roller 1. A doctor knife 5 removes any dispersion which is not in the grooves. Heated rollers 6 contact the surface of the hollow roller 1 and supply heat for the gelatinization of the dispersion in the grooves. A flexible fibrous backing material 10 may be fed on to the surface of the roller 1. Cooled rollers 7 contact roller 1 and cool the perforated resin sheet sufficiently for it to be easily stripped by the cooled roller 8. Specifications 500,298 and 566,388 are referred to.
