Abstract
604,620. Jointing by stamping. KOLLER, E. Nov. 28, 1945, No. 32191. Convention date, Oct. 2. [Class 83 (iv)] Two members, preferably profiled constructional members, are joined by bringing them into overlapping relationship, with the lateral edges of one member fitting into grooves formed by turned-over lateral edges of the other, and by pressing one over-lapping part into preformed depressions in the other. In one form, Fig. 1 and 2, two similar profiled members 1 and 1a meet in a butt joint and are connected by each being fastened to an overlapping connecting plate 3. The members 1 and 1a have turned-over lateral edges embracing the lateral edges of the plate 3 which is formed along its edges with indentations or holes 4 into which the metal of the members 1 and 1a is deformed. In a modification the plate 3 has a single row of holes along the middle of the upper face. The connecting plate 3 is preferably of harder metal than the profiled members 1 and 1a. An angular connecting plate may similarly be joined to each of two abutting mitred portions of, for example, a window frame. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which two members 5 joined by an overlapping angle plate 3 as in Fig. 1, are joined to a Z-iron 7. The parallel portions of the Z- iron are cut away leaving the bridge or web projecting in the form of a tongue which is bent up from the plane of the web and formed with recesses to receive at 8 and 9 the edges of lateral grooves formed on the tops of the members 5. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the flange 11 of a thole-pin 10 is inserted in embracing grooves in a profiled member 8, the edges of the grooves being deformed into depressions 9 and 10 in the flange. A joint may be strengthened by applying an adhesive, preferably an artificial resin to the parts before the deformation of one of the members. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a joint between two substantially flat sections, one having side edges bent at right angles, but not forming grooves. The first mentioned member has its edges recessed at intervals to receive metal displaced from the embracing edges of the second member. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
