Abstract

[Class 98 (ii)] A film splicer comprises a base member 11 carrying a die plate 12 provided with film cutting slots 14, upstanding pins 18 centrally disposed on the die plate for engaging in chosen film feed sprocket apertures and an auxiliary die plate 30 fitting removably over these pins and provided with holes for perforating as with a hand punch 33 the film splicing material at points in register with the sprocket apertures of the joined films. The films are held in place by clamping bars 23 which are pivoted on the plate 12 and when in use abut against stops 25. The width of the die plate 12 is approximately twice that of the film to be spliced. When not in use the screwed end 35 punch is passed through a hole 36 in the die plate 30 and screwed into a threaded hole in the main die plate 12. For making a lapped joint the two films are trimmed successively by placing the last whole frame over the four pins 18, clamping the strip, and shearing off the damaged strip portion with a razor blade. The films are them removed and a length of adhesively backed cellulose strip, preferably a transparent ribbon such as " scotch tape " is placed across the centre of the plate 12 and trimmed by shearing it off down the side edges of the plate, the trimmed film ends are placed over this so that the two ends slightly overlap, clamped in position and the free ends of the tape folded over on to the upper surface of the joint. Alternatively the tape is first applied to the upper surface of the clamped films and subsequently folded round them. The joined films are then perforated by punching through the holes 31 in the die plates 30 which is located by the pins 18 and the tape peened down around the sides of the apertures. For making a butt joint each film is trimmed along the transverse centre line of the endmost frame and are joined and perforated as before, the films being placed over the pins 18 so that the ends abut against each other.
