Abstract

603,755. Wick holders. TAYLOR, A. E. Oct. 30, 1945, Nos. 28706/45, 5925/46 and 20406/46. [Classes 75(i) and 75(iii)] In a pyrophoric lighter, a wick carrier 20, Fig. 4, for a wick partly or wholly composed of glass or non - combustible libres substantially completely surrounds the wick except possibly for a short length at one or both ends. The carrier may be formed by rolling a piece of sheet material into a tubular form, a projection of the sheet material forming a resilient tongue 27, or it may be cut from a tube and slotted and outwardly bowed to form resilient spring-like sections. The tubular carrier may be of metal or material not liable to be affected by heat or lighter fuel, and is preferably slightly conical and provided with lower serrations 24 to facilitate insertion of the wick in the wick hole and upper serrations 23 which are outwardly flared to provide a rim by which the carrier may be engaged and withdrawn from the wick hole. The wick may consist of glass, asbestos or other incombustible fibres 29 interlooped with cotton or other absorbent fibres 30, the fibres 30 being threaded through the tube in a U-shape till the loop extends beyond the upper end, the fibres 29 being then introduced through the loop and drawn into the tube by pulling on the lower end of the fibres 30. An aperture 22 may be provided in the carrier through which the thickest part 31 of the wick may protrude so that it is held in position in the carrier. The wicks may alternatively be held by notches impressed in the carrier after the wick has been inserted, or by a tongue directed towards the interior of the carrier. In an alternative form of composite wick, Fig. 7, a core 41 of absorbent fibres may be surrounded by a sheath 42 of incombustible fibres, or if desired the core may be incombustible and the sheath absorbent. The wick may be made of glass fibres threaded within the carrier in a U-loop, the base being held by the retaining means and the dual upper ends being splayed.
