Abstract
603,558. Pottery making. BOULTON. Ltd., W., and FARR, C. Oct. 25, 1945, No. 28127. [Class 87(i)] In a potter's jolley wherein a jolley arm carrying a profile tool is subjected to the action of automatic control means whereby it is lowered pivotally so as first to bring the tip of the tool into contact with the work and then the tool into full contact, whilst the work is rotated by a jigger head, the jolley arm is subjected to the action of two cams, one of which acts to lower the tip of the profile tool into contact with the central portion of the work and the other of which acts to bring the tool into full contact. The work is rotated in a head 12 on a vertical jigger spindle 11 and is shaped by a profile tool (not shown) carried by a jolley arm 20 supported by an arm 19 of a bell crank pivotally mounted on a shaft 16. The tip of the tool is brought into point contact with the work by the action on a roller 23, carried by the rear end 22 of the jolley arm, of a cam 14 on a rotating shaft 13. As soon as the point contact position is reached a roller 18 carried by the other arm 17 of the bell crank is moved towards and brought into contact with a rotating cam 15 on the shaft 13, and the front end of the jolley arm is moved rearwardly and downwardly to bring the profile into full contact with the work. A spindle 40 carries the work table 43 which is segment shaped and has two locations for moulds each consisting of a ring, 44 rotatably mounted in the table. Whilst one mould is being shaped a second may be loaded into the other ring 44, and when the shaping of the first mould is completed the table 43 is raised, rotated and lowered to place the second mould within the jigger head 12. To raise and lower the table 43, a further cam 25 on the shaft 13 operates on a roller 26 carried by a lever 27 pivotally mounted on a shaft 28 and connected by links 47 to a rotatable collar 48 located on the spindle 40 between fixed collars 49. To rotate the table 43 a cam 32 on a rotating shaft 28 acts on a roller 33 carried by a pivoted bell crank lever 34 to reciprocate through a pin and slot connection 37. 36. a slide 38 in a guide box 39. A pin 41 on the slide 38 engages a crank lever 42 on the spindle 40. An electric motor 9 drives. through a V-belt 55 and pulleys 56, the jigger spindle 11 and a spindle 57 carrying a worm 58 which engages a worm wheel 59 on the cam shaft 13. The shaft 28 is driven from the latter by a chain and sprockets. A scraper tool 61 for trimming the edges of the pieces is carried by a pivoted lever 62 actuated by an. adjustable set-screw 64 from a lever 65 projecting from a ring rotatable by a lever 67 carrying a roller 68 engaging a further cam on the shaft 13. The work support may have only one ring 44 and be non rotatable, or it may rotate in one direction only.
