Abstract

603,452. Automatic control systems for pottery kilns. MEAD, E., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 18, 1945, No. 18430. [Class 38 (iv)] Temperature control.-An automatic temperature control system for pottery firing kilns acts by varying the tappings on the heating element supply transformer instead of switching selected elements in and out of circuit. As shown, temperature responsive switches f, r close respectively at the upper and lower limits of the range within which the temperature is to be controlled and energize the operative coil F or R of an induction relay similar in construction to a shaded pole watt-hour meter. Coil TP forms one winding of the relay and also of a transformer having a secondary winding TS supplying relay coils F or R, the field of which combines with the field of TP and causes the relay rotor to turn in a forward or reverse direction, to close contact F1 or F2 and to energize the tap changing 3-phase motor M through relay CF and contact CF1, or relay RF and contact RF1, to vary the heater tappings in the appropriate direction to readjust the temperature. On motion of the tap changing arm, contact S1 is closed and S2 is opened, locking in relay CF or RF through contacts CF2 or RF2, and disconnecting the temperature responsive switches. The relay rotor is restored to normal by the opposite winding to that initially operative, which is energized through arm A, resistance RS, and segment SF or SR when the relay rotor is off normal. On completion of a tap change, S1 opens and S2 closes, stopping the motor and restoring the control circuit so that if contact F or r is still closed a further tap change is initiated. A delay between tap changing operations may be introduced to allow for the thermal capacity of the kiln by delaying the closure of S2 after tap changing. Relays CF, RF may have additional circuits for manual operation.
