Abstract
602,992. Vulcanizing indiarubber. PAULSEN, J. F. Nov. 15,1945, No. 30563. Convention date, June 1, 1943. [Class 70] Hollow indiarubber bodies, particularly flexible on semi-rigid, tubes, are vulcanized by means of a hot fluid, particularly water, which is caused to traverse the body continuously and contacts the external and internal faces successively. Vulcanization is carried out in a container 1 capable of withstanding pressure corresponding to the vapour tension of the liquid. In one form, the tubes 2 are attached to nipples 23 in the walls of a frame movable on rollers 11 into the oven. Hot water is pumped into the space 16 and passes through the nipples into the tubes. A valve 18 in the hollow endpiece 17 allows the water to escape and so to pass round the outside of the tubes when a certain pressure is obtained, thus maintaining a higher pressure inside the tubes. The initial supply of water may be obtained from a cistern 25, and the container is connected to a supply of hot water under pressure, at least one circulating pump being provided. In one modification, steam pipes are arranged in the water-circulating system, and a second modification describes apparatus whereby long lengths of tube can be vulcanized.
