Abstract
602,808. Banding - machines. CAMCC (MACHINERY), Ltd., and LANGFORD, J J. July 3, 1945, No. 16958. [Class 94 (i)] In a machine for securing bundles of paper sheets or like articles, the article: are stacked on a band of binding material previously laid on the upper surface of a vertically movable work table urged up wardly by resilient means, the stack ther being pressed down by a mechanically operated presser until its upper surface lies at a chosen level, whereupon the ends of the band are mechanically folded in turn across the stack in overlapping relationship and secured together. Binding material 24 from a reel 23 is fed over the work-table 10 by manually rotating a handle 34 in an arcuate slot 35 between stops 38, 39, whereby a feed roller 26 is rotated, ratchet mechanism 32 avoiding rotation on retraction of the handle, and the stop 39 being adjustable to vary the length of the band according to the size of the stack. The table 10 is of cruciform shape and its limbs 10b are bestraddled by side lays 14, 15 adjustable according to the width of the stack. A pedal 48 is then depressed, when by link-and-lever mechanism the knife 40 of a guillotine 40, 41 moves down to sever the desired length of band, and an adhesive-applying roller 53 whose bearings are linked to the knife 40 moves out of contact with a supply roller 52 and into contact with the severed band, whence as the band is drawn down during the banding operation the roller 53 rotates and applies adhesive up to the end of the band. The roller 52 is rotated by connection with the feed roller 26 so as to supply adhesive from a bath 50 to the roller 53. The pedal 48 also operates a trip clutch 70 effective only for one revolution of the gear wheel 68 mounted loosely on the shaft 69, whereby the wheel 68, driven by an electric motor through a pulley 58, is put into operative connection with the shaft 69. The shaft 69 through a cam 83 and link- and-lever mechanism 85, 89 causes a bracket 91 to be depressed, whereby the stack, having been manually placed on the band on the table 10, is depressed by two saddle members 92 until its upper surface is level with the top of the side lays 14, 15, the table 10 being depressed against the action of springs normally urging it upwards to the position shown. Through similar bevel wheels 74 at each end of the shaft 69, cams 75, and link-and-lever mechanism, folding blades 21, 22 are moved in turn over the top of the stack, passing between the saddles 92 and folding the ends of the band over the stack in overlapping relationship, the ends being secured by the adhesive on the lower side of the upper band end. The blade 22 is slightly higher than the blade 21. A hinged guide 21' is deflected by the blade 21 and in its normal position prevents the end of the band when fed over the table from fouling the blade 21. The blades are in turn retracted and the saddles raised by continued rotation of the shaft 69, and the completed package removed by hand.
