Abstract

An insecticidal composition comprises a mixture with a solid, finely divided, inert diluent or carrier of a compound of the formula <FORM:0602259/VI/1> R1-S-R2, wherein R1 means one or more halogen atoms, of which one must be in the p-position, and/or nitro-groups, R2 means a halogen substituted aryl residue or an acylated nitrogen atom, and n means the numbers 0, 1 or 2. The structural formulae of many compounds are given in which R1 is nitro-, chloro- or bromo-, and R2 chloro-, bromo-, nitrophenyl-, and acetamido-, propionamido, &c., and N-alkyl substituted derivatives thereof. Other active substances, e.g., phthalonitrile, thiourea and derivatives, xanthone, thianthrene, sulphur, and copper compounds may be present in the admixture. In examples, (1) calcium carbonate is precipitated in a stock emulsion, prepared as in Specification 602,747, and the p precipitate containing the active substance dried in vacuo at 30 DEG C; (2) a mixture of calcium carbonate and talcum is saturated with an alcohol or acetone solution of 4 : 41-dichloro-diphenylsulphone and the solvent removed in vacuo. Lime and a liquid fatty acid are then added, giving on grinding, a strewing and dusting agent; (3) a mixture of ground limestone, chalk and bentonite is saturated with an alcohol or acetone solution of the following compounds, the solvent distilled off in vacuo, and sodium carbonate and acid casein added to yield a mass which, mixed with water, is a spraying agent. The compounds are: 4 : 41 dichloro-diphenylsulphone and/or or 3 : 4 dichlorobenzenesulphone-acetamide and xanthone or phthalonitrile.
