[Class 40 (ii)] A phonograph apparatus, in which the engagement and disengagement of the pick-up with the record is automatically effected by the insertion and withdrawal of a drawer, consists of a casing 1, Fig. 1, carrying the pick-up arm 3 and support, and a drawer 2 carrying the turntable and a cam 21, Fig. 7, which, during withdrawal and re-insertion of the drawer 2, effects both lifting of the pick-up arm 3 and its return to the starting position. When the drawer 2 is withdrawn, the lift rod 8, Fig. 4, rides up the cam slope 23 and lifts the pick-up arm 3 by means of the arm 9 and associated finger 10. Furthermore, during the opening and shutting operation of the drawer 2, the pick-up arm 3 is returned to the correct starting position by the engagement of the pin 20, Fig. 4, on the lever 19 with the cam surfaces 41 and 42, Fig. 7, and spring-loaded guide members 30 and 29. During this operation the current to the motor is interrupted by the breaking of a switch operated by a cam 13, Fig. 1. Adjustment for two sizes of record is effected by rotation of an eccentric disc 35 which moves the cam 21 about the pin 33, Figs. 4 and 7. In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown) a revolving cam, fitted with a toothed wheel and driven by a rack fixed to the drawer 2 is used. In another arrangement, Fig. 12 (not shown), the motor is separated from the turntable, and frictional contact is effected only when the drawer 2 is closed. In this case, no provision is made for lifting the pick-up arm, but instead the turntable is lifted and lowered by engagement with a fixed cam in the casing 1. Adjustment is provided in each arrangement for two sizes of record.
