Abstract

601,906. Automatic exchange systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 2, 1945, No. 5241. Convention date, April 21, 1944. [Class 40 (iv)] In an automatic exchange system a subscriber is provided with a number of keys which, when depressed cause representative resistances t( be connected successively in the subscriber's loop. At the exchange the register comprises pairs of gas discharge tubes which respond to particular potentials characteristic of the selected loop resistances and control selector switches in accor dance therewith. A series resistance is inserted in each loop at the sub station to compensate for differ ences in line resistances. The key sender is described fully in Specification 601,947 and comprises ten numbered keys. When any of these is depressed the local ringer and transmitter are short-circuited and two or three of five contacts, depending on the key depressed, are operated in turn to cut corresponding resistances into the subscriber's loop. When a calling line is extended to the register, relay RAR releases, followed by slow-release relay LDR, thus momentarily earthing the line to discharge it, and connecting line a to point E1. Relay RBR then operates HTR to connect the point E1 to 48-volt battery and to connect high tension to the valve circuits. Dialling tone is connected over tone transformer TT. The incoming series of potentials is now applied to the gas-discharge tubes, the appropriate combination of which fires, as described in Specification 628,174 and operates corresponding relays GVR1 ... GVR5. GVR5 is operated last for all keys and connects earth to the operated relay contacts and thence to digit storage relays XR. In addition, GVR5 releases HTR to cut-off the tubes and removes earth from the operated XR relays, which thereupon lock up in series with transfer relay TR1. This transfers the tube circuits to the second set of XR relays for the second digit. The process is repeated similarly for all remaining digits. Specification 624,557 also is referred to.
