[Class 5(i)] In a bread-slicing machine of the kind having a pair of knife-frames reciprocated in opposite directions, each frame is pivotally mounted at its driving end and is provided at its upper end with a guide finger 39, or 40, which is engaged between a pair of rollers 47, 52, one roller being retractable so that, when necessary, the knife frames may be swung away from one another. The machine comprises a casing within which is mounted an electric motor 6 driving rocker arms 18, 19 on a shaft 20 by means of a belt drive 10 and cranks 13, 14. The rocker arms carry shafts 26, 30 on which are pivotally mounted the lower ends of knife frames 28, 32. The upper ends 35 of the knife frames carry' guide fingers 39, 40 which pass through openings in a plate 43 and co-operate with pairs of rollers 47, 52 and 49, 51. One roller of each pair is retractably mounted so that, by drawing aside the roller the corresponding knife frame may be swung away from its fellow. The knife blades 54 are provided with holes at each end, the upper holes 58 being engaged by pins 59 on spring-loaded clips 60 carried by the upper ends 35 of the knife frames. The loaf to be cut is placed on a slide 67 and is propelled through the knife frames by means of a pusher device comprising a bar 81 mounted on a pair of pivoted arms 79. The bar carries fins 83 which pass between the knives. The cut loaf is received on a delivery tray 102 provided with devices (Fig. 16-not shown) enabling packing of the cut slices into a bag without handling. The arms 79 on the pusher are associated with a cam surface and linkwork, Fig. 11 (not shown), for switching the motor current on and off at predetermined positions of the arms.
