Abstract

In a process of condensing together resorcinol, formaldehyde and an incompletely polymerized melamine-formaldehyde condensation product an alkali is added. The preferred molar ratio of resorcinol to formaldehyde (excluding formaldehyde combined with the melamine) varies between 1 : 1 and 1 : 3. Sufficient alkali is added to produce a pH of 7.5 or higher. Suitable alkalies are caustic soda, triethanolamine, potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, or triethylamine. Part of the melamine may be replaced by dicyandiamide or urea. The products are especially suitable for cold-setting adhesives and may be used to bond plywood or other laminated articles. Speed of curing may be adjusted by varying one or more of the following factors: the ratio of formaldehyde to resorcinol, the ratio of formaldehyde to melamine, and the alkalinity. In examples (1)-(8), a condensation product is used prepared from 1 mol. melamine and 3 mols. formaldehyde at pH 6.3, followed by dehydration at pH 8-8.5, cooling and grinding. The powder is water soluble. In example (1), this product is dissolved in formalin, and resorcinol and caustic soda are added and the mixture heated to 50 DEG C. The reaction is exothermic and the product gels and soon hardens to a clear or white mass. Example (2) is similar, but the condensation is effected without alkali, and the effect of adding varying amounts of alkali to portions of the condensation product is described. The products are particularly resistant to acids and boiling water. In example (9) trimethylol melamine is employed and in example (10) hexamethylol melamine. Specification 502,720 is referred to.
