Abstract

601,083. Electric weighing-apparatus. GROOT, M. J. DE. Oct. 9, 1945, No. 26335. Convention date, June 14, 1941. [Class 143] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A conductor supported in a magnetic or electric field is tensioned by a weight to be measured, and a current passed through the wire to deflect it in the field. The weight is then measured either by the deflection produced by a predetermined current or by the current or voltage needed to produce a predetermined deflection. Fig. 1 shows the conductor wire 1 supported between the poles 4, 5, of a permanent or electromagnet. Deflection of the wire is observed by means of a light source 8, and aligned optical projection systems 6, 7 located inside the poles 4, 5, which project an image of the wire on to a screen 9. The weight to be measured is suspended from the wire at 3, but in an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3, (not shown) the wire is supported at its ends in a horizontal position and loaded by the weight at an intermediate point. In this case the weight is measured by the current flow needed in the conductor to annul the deflection produced by the weight. The sensitivity of the arrangement is adjustable by varying the magnetic or electric field. When light objects are being weighed, the wire 1 may consist of a quartz thread covered with gold or other conducting material, and may be mounted in a vacuum together with the means for taking up the load.
