Abstract

An aviation motor fuel composition adapted for use in supercharged engines comprises an essentially isoparaffinic aviation base fuel containing a large proportion of alkylate gasoline, this base fuel having added thereto 2-6mls./gallon of tetraethyl lead and 2-10 per cent by volume of xylidine. Any of the xylidines or a mixture thereof may be employed. Base fuels which are especially desirable are those containing relatively large amounts of 2,2-dimethylbutane or 2,2,4-trimethylpentane. Alkylate gasolines from the thermal alkylation or the aluminium chloride catalysed alkylation of isobutane with ethylene or from the hydrogen fluoride catalysed alkylation of isobutane with isobutylene are suitable. The fuel composition may contain other common fuel constituents such as gum inhibitors and agents for scavenging metallic engine deposits. If desired, the xylidine may be omitted from the fuel composition and only injected into the fuel composition or into the engine at times of increased power demand. In the examples, the fuel compositions consists of (a) straight run gasoline, alkylation gasoline obtained by the sulphuric acid catalysed alkylation of isobutane with butylene, mixed xylidines and tetraethyl lead and (b) straight run gasoline, isopentane, benzene, the alkylation gasoline of (a), mixed xylidines and tetraethyl lead. For comparison purposes, fuel compositions consisting of (i) iso-octane and tetraethyl lead; (ii) composition (a) with the omission of xylidine, and (iii) composition (b) with xylidine replaced by N,N-dimethylaminobenzene or N-propylaminobenzene are described. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to a motor fuel comprising a base fuel having anti-knock characteristics together with a xylidine. The base fuel may be straight run gasoline, thermally or catalytically cracked gasoline, polymer gasoline particularly the hydrogenated dimer from the cold acid catalysed polymerisation of isobutylene, alkylation gasoline, thermally or catalytically reformed or hydroformed gasoline and various blends of such products. The base fuel may contain tetraethyl lead or other anti-knock agent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
