Abstract
600,997. Coating yarns. UNIVERSAL WINDING CO. Nov. 29, 1945, No. 32274. Convention date, Dec. 4, 1944. [Class 140] A running strand of yarn is coated with liquid by causing it to draw in continuous wiping contact against the rim of a basin across which liquid supplied to the basin is fed as an overflow, so that the yarn takes up liquid from the overflow at the rim. As shown, a yarn y, ballooning outwardly as it is drawn from a cone C, sweeps around a lip 24 of a conical wall 22 defining a circular opening in a basin 20 to which liquid is supplied by pipes 31, 33 from a tank 30 in quantity sufficient to overflow the rim 24. The overflow runs into a gutter 27 and thence through a pipe 34 into a tank 35 from which it is returned by a pump 36 to the reservoir. The moistened yarn is drawn through a tension device, which may comprise a pair of gridlike members 7 and 8 resiliently pressed against the yarn, a slub-catcher 9, around a guide 10, and wound up on a cop-tube T mounted on a winding spindle 3 driven at constant speed. The rate of supply of liquid to the basin 20 may be increased during the winding operation'to make up for the increased rate of travel of the yarn due to the increasing diameter of the wound package P. The growing package P pushes away the upper arm 16 of the traverse-frame 15 which carries the threadguide 5 and mechanism for its operation and is pivoted at 14. The resulting movement of the lower arm 17, transmitted by an adjustable link 50 to a lever 42, operates a valve 32 to increase the flow of liquid. The lengths of the levers and the link and the setting of the valve may be adjusted to suit different yarns and coating liquids. The yarn may be any strand material, natural or synthetic. The liquid applied may be an oily emulsion. Specification 558,082, [Group IX], is referred to.
