Abstract
600,854. Musical instruments. PEGRUM, D. H. Aug. 29, 1945, No. 22246. [Classes 13 and 88 (ii)] A means for producing sound waves from a vibrating body or string comprises supporting the vibrating body on a bridge member or frame and communicating the vibrations from the latter to a sound radiator through a mechanical matching device. The radiator may be a diaphragm of comparatively small mass and the amplifier an arrangement of levers. In the form applied to a piano, the strings P, Fig. 2, are mounted on a frame F which is flexibly supported on a bracket S6 attached to a heavy mounting M5. This frame is free at its upper end and its vibrations are communicated through a rod N to a lever L pivoted on a spring S7 and having its free end connected to a diaphragm D. In a modified form more suitable for the higher frequencies the vibrations of the frame are communicated through a bell crank to a coil spring which is made to twist when compressed and thereby to actuate the diaphragm through a radial lever, Fig. 3 (not shown). In further modifications a bridge piece is attached to the strings and connected through a lever to a light soundboard, Fig. 4 (not shown).
