Abstract
600,746. Cash registers. ALLEN-WALES ADDING MACHINE CORPORATION. Oct. 15, 1945, No. 26943. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1942. [Class 106 (i)] The mainshaft of a cash register is locked if no key in a special bank is depressed or if any of the keys are only half-depressed. As applied to a machine of the Wales type, when an entry is made on the keyboard properly, the mainshaft 1 is moved by a motor or by a crank 1a from the angular position A counterclockwise to position B, Fig. 5. A roller 11 on a full-stroke sector 2 releases a key-release lever 14 and an interlock lever 5 which move under spring action to their broken-line positions, the lever 14 withdrawing from the path of a latching bar 18, Fig. 10, which moves under spring action leftwards, and the tail 22 of the lever 5 descending to meet the zone 21 of the bar 18. The bar 18 rocks the usual locking strips 26, one to each row of keys, which engage above or below lugs 25 on the key stems according to whether the related keys are depressed or not. Depression of a key 24 in the special enforced designation group rocks a stop member 34 clockwise out of the path of a tongue 33 of a lever 29 pivoted at 30 and engaging a locking strip 26. The bar 18 is thus free to move to the left and the mainshaft 1 is free to move to position B from which it can be returned to position. A, the lever 14 restoring the bar 18 to its rightmost position. Entry into the totalizer and printing take place in known manner. A half-depression of any key 23 or 24 causes the abutment of its associated locking strip 26 against the key lug 25 and the bar 18 is prevented from moving to the left, whereupon the tail 22 of the lever 5 engages the zone 20 of the bar 18; preventing a nose 10 of the lever 5 withdrawing from engagement with a stop block 3 to limit the movement of the main shaft. If no key 24 is depressed, the related stop member 34 abuts the tongue 33 of the lever 29 and prevents movement of the bar 18 with a like result. More than one enforced designation group may be provided.
