[Class 46] [Also in Groups V and XXVIII] A filter element for use with liquids or gases is composed of cotton fibres, preferably cotton linters, which have been temporarily or permanently deposited in or on a former after being treated with a plastic solution, such as an aqueous solution of a formaldehyde resin, so adjusted that when the resin is subsequently cured it is deposited solely upon the points of intersection of the fibres. The adjustment can be achieved by regulation of the concentration of resin in the solvent, a one to four per cent aqueous solution of urea formaldehyde resin for example being a suitable concentration. In the arrangement shown, a suspension of cotton linters in an aqueous solution of a formaldehyde resin is deposited on a two-part or hinged former 1 supported in a perforated cylinder 2 which is provided with a base 3 and a central spindle 5. A perforated core 5a, an end cap 6 and a pressure plate 7 are positioned in the former. When the former has been filled with linters a cap 6a and a pressure plate 7a are fitted at the top of the former which is then placed on a platen 8 provided with studs 8a protruding through holes 4 in the base 3. Pressure is then applied to the plate 7a and the linters are compressed until the caps 6, 6a engage the ends of the core 5a. The former is then opened and the linters removed for drying and curing of the resin. The former may be of corrugated form. The linters instead of being deposited from a liquid suspension may be packed by means of a steam or air blast or by hand moulding. Specification 600,208 is referred to.
