Abstract

600,085. Automatic control systems for winding equipment. HAWKINS, C. G., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. June 25, 1945, No. 16179. [Class 38 (iv)] In web-winding equipment the power input to a motor driving a winding reel is maintained constant against progressively increasing torque and the speed maintained constant on removal of the load due, for example, to a break in the web. In the Figure, the armature of the winding motor 3 which drives reel 2 is supplied from lines 4, 5 and the separately excited field 3a is series connected with metadyne 8 across supply lines 6, 7. The field 8a of the metadyne is supplied from thermionic device 9 to which are applied voltages from the series field 3b and resistor 16. The input to component 9b of device 9 is dependent on the armature current of the winding-reel motor 3 which is maintained at a predetermined level through the action of device 9 on metadyne field 8a and hence on field 3a. As the winding diameter of reel 2 increases, the field of the motor 3 is strengthened to raise the torque progressively and to maintain constant the tension of the web 1. With a sudden rise in speed of motor 3, for example, due to breaking of web 1, the bridge formed by tachometer generator 10 and resistors 11, 12 and 16 is unbalanced and the resultant voltage unbalance across a part of resistor 16 is applied to component 9c and reacts on field 3a through metadyne 8 to limit the speed of motor 3. Under normal conditions of winding, the bridge is automatically maintained in a balanced condition by the movement of contact 12a by motor 17 in correspondence with the lowering of tachometer 10 voltage with the fall in speed of motor 3 and the component 9c has no effect in motor 3. Actuation of switch 18 causes winding 17b to restore balance of the bridge when, for example, replacement of the winding-reel is necessary. In a further embodiment, the metadyne 8 has two further fields 8c, a constant field 8b and a field 8c varying directly with the armature current of winding motor 3, the input 9b to the thermionic device 9 being dispensed with.
